What's KAP?

The Knowledge Application Program (KAP) is a Center for Substance Abuse Treatment project that takes knowledge about best treatment practices and gives this knowledge wings by putting it in the hands of providers who are helping to free individuals from substance abuse.

How Does It Work?
We take the KNOWLEDGE about the best treatment practices in substance abuse treatment and package and promote it in such a way as to ensure that the APPLICATION of this knowledge in the field is widespread. All of this is accomplished through a strategic PROGRAM. Through this program, KAP staff produce, market, and distribute publications and products; strive for cultural competency; gather, analyze, and use market research; and enlist the assistance of national experts to ensure that KAP is responsive to the needs of its many audiences and that its products are representative of the many areas of substance abuse. KAP networks through presentations and conference participation.

How Do We Know All of This?

Simple — we asked.

The Cultural Competency & Diversity Network (CCDN) is a group of individuals from a variety of cultural groups that provides counsel to KAP. The purpose of the Cultural Competency & Diversity Network is to assist KAP in improving the cultural competency of KAP products and documents. To date, there are CCDN work groups composed of the following: Native Americans; Hispano/Latinos; Asian and Pacific Islanders; African Americans; and lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender individuals.

The Multi-Language Initiative (MLI) also works to ensure that KAPs products are accessible, culturally meaningful, and sensitive to the populations it serves. This is accomplished by adapting KAP materials for consumers or clients whose first language is not English.
